Academics from Balıkesir University have published a study on gender perspectives in nursing in the Journal of Nursing Science (Hemşirelik Bilimi Dergisi), indexed in TR Dizin.
The authors are Dr Nurşah Tatoğlu, Lecturer, and Assistant Professors Vacide Ancın and Mehmet Gülşen from İvrindi Vocational School of Health Services, alongside Associate Professor Ayşe Karadaş from the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences.
The article, “Gender Views on Being a Woman and a Man in the Nursing Profession: A Qualitative Study in the Context of Tokenism”, explores nurses’ experiences through in-depth interviews with 15 participants.
The study identified three main themes covering the advantages and disadvantages of the profession and gender-related perspectives on nursing. Participants described how gender can bring both opportunities and challenges. Their accounts highlighted discrimination, prejudice, inequality and increased workload affecting male nurses, alongside certain perceived advantages.
The findings contribute to discussions on gender equality in nursing and may help inform efforts to create more inclusive working environments.
